Load capacity and stiffness of guide rings

Contact geometry, load capacity and stiffness of a resilient thermoplastic guide (wear) ring supporting a piston/rod, from piston diameter, ring width/thickness, elastic indentation, radial clearance and modulus of elasticity. Unlocked from the legacy demo gate; general in shaft diameter and indentation.

Load capacity and stiffness of guide rings — original diagram from /calculators/e2_8b.htm
Semi contact axis, b/R = 2b/D1
Angle of contact, φ179.98 deg
Mean bearing pressure, pm = F/(2bB)7.07 MPa
Average bearing pressure, F/(LD)7.07 MPa
Local max bearing pressure, pmax9 MPa
Load capacity, F3534.29 N
Stiffness, F/δ353.43 1e6 N/m

Unlocked from the legacy "please login" gate on piston diameter D and elastic indentation eps. The gate only froze D=50mm and eps=0.5% before the formula runs; D and eps are used solely via R=D/2, pmax=eps*E, ds=eps*s and directly in F=pspec*L*D and the pspec term (E*D/s), with no second hardcoded literal anywhere else in the formula (see header comment) — so it is faithfully general once the gate is removed, exactly mirroring plain-bearing-wear.ts.

Method & references

  • Guide (wear) ring load capacity and stiffness from Hertz-like contact geometry, same formula family as e2_8 (polymer-bearing-static-load), parametrized by target elastic indentation instead of max contact pressure.

The computation is a literal port of the original client-side JavaScript from /calculators/e2_8b.htm. Results are verified equal to the original by an automated golden-master test. No formula has been re-derived or “improved”.
