The maximum shear stress of ductile materials (steels) at first yield is usually taken as τ = 0.58·Rp0.2, according to the von Mises distortion-energy criterion. For brittle materials, τ = 0.5·Rp0.2 (Tresca maximum-shear-stress criterion).
G = E / (2(1+ν)), where ν is the Poisson ratio.
τ = G·γ, where τ is the shear stress and γ the shear (angular) strain — in analogy with Hooke's law, σ = E·ε.
