Method & references

  • Hertz contact theory for elastic cylindrical bodies in line contact.
  • Hertz boundary conditions assumed valid to a material depth of at least 5x the contact width b (legacy page note).
  • R2 negative represents a concave (conforming) counter-surface, e.g. a cylinder running in a groove.

The computation is a literal port of the original client-side JavaScript from /calculators/e2_9.htm. Results are verified equal to the original by an automated golden-master test. No formula has been re-derived or “improved”.
